Caller ID Spoofing - Who is Really Calling You?

Do you know what caller ID spoofing is? If not you could be the victim of a hoax, a joke or even a crime. Caller ID Spoofing is when someone calls you up and using a caller ID spoof card, tricks your caller ID display into identifying the caller as someone else.

A prankster or con man can call you up using a spoof card and make it look as if you are being called by your local police dept, the IRS, a local emergency room or just about anything their imagination can come up with. In fact there have even been reported instances of people using this technology to trick 911 dispatchers.

A caller ID spoof card can also be used by a private investigator in a pretext call to get the subject of an investigation to reveal information about themselves. For instance a PI can call a subject, fake the caller ID to look like the call is coming from a delivery service like UPS or a florist. They can obtain a name and address from a phone number or even an alternate delivery address like a work address.

Bill collectors and collection agents, tired of their calls going unanswered also use caller ID spoofing to get through to the target of a collection or vehicle reposition.

Even regular people can use it to get through to an ex boyfriend or girlfriend that has been screening their calls.

Some call spoofing systems also have feature like voice changers and the ability to record calls. You can then download the recorded calls to a file on your computer. That file can then be emailed if necessary.

So the next time you get a phone call and use caller ID to screen it be careful. You might be getting spoofed. But also remember that the next time your calls are getting ditched you can also utilize caller ID spoofing to get through that call screener.
