When Undeleting Deleted SMS - How Far Back You Go?

When you need to recover some deleted SMS from your cellular Phone the very first question you may be asking in. How far back can you go? It's a very common question and a very good question but the answer is not so simple.

First of all there is a great deal of data that may be found on or recovered from a modern day cell phone or smart phone:

- Deleted SMS Messages
- Detailed Call Records; Dialed/ Received/ Times/ Durations
- Deleted Pics & Graphics
- Deleted Video
- Contact Names & Phone Numbers
- Deleted Address Book
- Email Addresses
- Deleted Caller ID
- Sext Messages
- Other Deleted Data

But there are a number of factors that will determine the amount of data recovered as well as the age or length of time from deletion that SMS can be recovered. Some common factors include the make and model of the device. Is it smart phone? Does it store pictures and video?

The storage capacity of the device, the daily usage of the device and also the type of usage. If you just use the phone to send and receive phone calls and there are only a few texts the chances are good that very old deleted texts are still recoverable.

If you use the device daily to take pics and record video the likelihood of recovering very old data decreases.

Whenever a text message is deleted is creates open usable new storage space on the device. As new data is entered into the device it will seek out available space and overwrite old deleted data. This does not mean that a new text message will overwrite an old deleted text message. Pics, videos, stored messages ad phone numbers will all overwrite the old deleted data.

But even with all this being said there are unpredictable flukes, A deleted texts from yesterday may be unrecoverable and a dozen from last year could still be there. There's just no telling sometimes.

As you can see it's literally impossible to predict how much data or how far back you can go to retrieve old texts messages from a cell phone. There are just too many factors to predict the outcome of the forensic data recovery process. But one thing can be predicted and that is if you do not attempt to recover the at you can be 100% sure that no data will be recovered.
